Once Upon a Time in America is a 1984 epic crime film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Robert De Niro and James Woods. It is a loose adaptation of the novel The Hoods by Harry Grey. The film tells the story of four Jewish-American gangsters in New York City's Lower East Side, from their childhood in the early 1920s to their rise and fall as gangsters during the Prohibition era.
The film begins with David "Noodles" Aaronson (De Niro) returning to New York City after 35 years in exile. He is haunted by the ghosts of his past, and the film then flashes back to his childhood, when he and his friends, Max Bercovicz (Woods), Patrick "Patsy" Goldberg (Joe Pesci), and Philip "Cockeye" Stein (Burt Young), were petty criminals on the streets of New York.
The four friends eventually form a gang and become involved in bootlegging and other illegal activities. They rise through the ranks of the underworld, but their success comes at a cost. Noodles is betrayed by Max, and he is forced to flee the country.
When Noodles returns to New York City, he is determined to find out why Max betrayed him and to get revenge. He also wants to find Deborah Gelly (Elizabeth McGovern), the woman he loved who left him many years ago.
Noodles soon discovers that Max has become a powerful and wealthy man. He also learns that Max was involved in a major heist that went wrong, and that Noodles is being blamed for the crime.
Noodles must now confront his past and the people who betrayed him. He must also decide whether to seek revenge or to try to build a new life for himself.
The film ends with Noodles leaving New York City once again, but this time he is finally at peace with his past.
Once Upon a Time in America is a complex and meditative film that explores themes of friendship, betrayal, love, loss, and redemption. It is considered to be one of the greatest gangster films ever made.
